People’s League Renamed As

J&K People’s League has been renamed as J&K People’s Freedom League (PFL). This was announced here by Muhammad Farooq Rehmani Chairman J&K PL in a meeting of the members of his organization. He said the proposal to modify the name of the party was discussed by the central council at Srinagar for many months and finally it was approved by the Chairman of JKPL. There was no change in the aims and objectives of the organization.

            Muhammad Farooq Rehmani is in Pakistan for the last ten years. People’s League was founded in Srinagar in 1974 to fight for the right of self-determination for the people of Kashmir under the UNCIP resolutions. Muhammad Farooq Rehmani became Chairman of J&K PL in 1978. He drafted the constitution of the JKPL in 1979 & its manifesto in 1990. Muhammad Farooq Rehmani spent many of his years in Indian Jails and interrogation centers between 1968 & 1990. After migrating to Pakistan he became convener of  13 party alliance Tehreek Hurriet Kashmir(THK).

            He led the alliance from 1991 to 1993. He has to his credit various books & booklets on the freedom struggle of Kashmiris such as 1.Azadi KI Talash 2. Sheikh Abdullah ke Naqoosh  3. Kashmir Mein Zalzalay 4. Negotiations over Kashmir 5. Long Struggle of Freedom and its Status 6. Odyssey of Freedom etc. His first book the Azadi Ki Talash(Search for freedom)in Urdu was banned by the Kashmir government but later the Kashmir high court  issued a stay order against the publication. In 1960 & 1970’s Muhammad Farooq Rehmani worked as editor of some newspapers & periodicals such as Azan’ Nusratul Islam, Aflak. And projected Kashmir at various international fora.         

            After changing the name of this organization it has been decided that the following office bearers in Kashmir would continue to function as before 1. Nazir Ahmed Butt as acting Chairman 2. Ghulam Muhammad Gash as General Secretary 3. Dr. Nazir Ahmed as information Secretary.  #END#
